“The Man in the Arena”讀後感2—幸運、心安與滿足



第一篇讀後感提到的財經作家跟理財顧問還算有點知名度的人物,The Man in the Arena書中收藏了許多”更小”的人物,寫給柏格的信。

譬如柏格頭John Edward寫道:

“I was fortunate to learn of his investment strategies at the start of my earning years.”

對於在自己開始工作賺錢的早期,就學得柏格的投資策略,他覺得自己相當幸運。

能在二三十歲就懂得並實際體會到指數化投資好處的投資人,”幸運”應會是共通的感覺。

就像很多年輕人一樣,Edward也曾以為可以掌握市場脈動,趨吉避凶。

他的寫法很傳神:

“I felt as long as I kept my finger on the pulse of the market, I would easily outpace it.”

事實上,對市場把脈是個很難持續有用的投資方法。愈早體會到這個事實,會是愈好的事。

另外有封從德州Wolfforth,一個四千多人的小鎮,署名”Vanguard Shareholder”寫給柏格先生的信。信中提到:

“One of the primary benefits of investing at Vanguard has been the almost complete lack of worry about our portfolio.”

在Vanguard投資最大的好處之一,就是完全不必擔心自己的投資組合。

還有一封在2002寫給柏格的信。這一年是網路泡沫破滅後空頭的第三年。這位太太說:

“I will celebrate my 90th birthday August 31st and the present market situation has not worried me at all.”

這年八月,她就要慶祝自己90歲生日。而對於目前的市場狀況,自己完全不擔心。

我有同感。在2016寫成的指數化投資十週年紀念這篇文章中,我提到指數化投資的首要感覺就是”心安”。

心安,投資行動就能穩定。不為市場所動,才能獲取市場報酬。跟著市場恐慌與興奮,往往會帶來負面成果。

還有一封信是第一代越南移民寫的,時間是2012年。她跟家人是在身無分文,全部財產就是身上穿的衣服的狀況下來到美國。她藉著柏格教導的投資知識,勤奮存錢、審慎投資參與市場,在十年之內,她還清了房貸、學貸,還已經達成一個有點份量的投資組合。

這是指數化投資的實際成果。

一個令人感到幸福的投資方式。
一個令人感到心安的投資方式。
一個實際有用的投資方式。

那就是低成本的指數化投資。

柏格先生的成就,在於他讓許許多多的小投資人有了自己的財務成就。成就他人,也就是成就自己。這些來自小人物的信,才是柏格成就的最大見證。

回到書名,The Man in the Arena,競技場中的人,什麼意思?

這來自美國總統羅斯福在1910的演說:

“It is not the critic who counts; not the man who points out how the strong man stumbles, or where the doer of deeds could have done them better. The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena, whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood; who strives valiantly; who errs, who comes short again and again, because there is no effort without error and shortcoming; but who does actually strive to do the deeds; who knows great enthusiasms, the great devotions; who spends himself in a worthy cause; who at the best knows in the end the triumph of high achievement, and who at the worst, if he fails, at least fails while daring greatly, so that his place shall never be with those cold and timid souls who neither know victory nor defeat. ”

“真正重要的,不是批評者、不是那些指出別人如何跌倒,怎樣做會更好的人。榮耀屬於在競技場中拼鬥的人。那些臉上被灰塵、汗水、血漬沾汙的人、那些一再犯錯,但仍努力不懈的人。為一個值得的目標,投入熱情與付出的人。….”

柏格就是The Man in the arena,挺身而出,指出業界那裡不對,並提出實際解答方案的人。

他也因此成為主動投資與高成本投資界最大的箭靶,滿身傷痕。

但他巨大的身影,庇護了成千上萬的一般投資人,讓我們免受錯誤投資觀念的毒害,免受高費用投資的侵蝕。

柏格先生是當代投資界最偉大的格鬥士。而且他不是為自己,是為所有的一般投資人,如你如我一般的小投資人奮戰不歇。

The Man in the Arena是一本傳頌這段當代傳奇的書。

而在1970年代,當柏格先生推出第一支給一般投資人使用的指數型基金時,說”Bogle’s Folly”、說指數化投資是”Unamerican”的人。還有那些到今天,看到指數化投資已經在理論
實務上都證明有效,得到愈來愈多投資人的認同後,還在說些像:”柏格推行指數化投資就是為了讓Vanguard賺錢”這種話的人。

我們都很清楚,這些人都是The man NOT in the arena。他們就是羅斯福演說中那些專門評斷他人的人,那些Cold and timid souls who neither know victory nor defeat.

又又money--投資、理財、股市、財經、商業、創業 提到...

沒有柏格先生,就沒有現在的低成本指數投資環境;
沒有綠角大大,台灣就連「低成本」指數投資觀念都沒什麼人知道。
